Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
